In both my digital art and ethnographic artistic research, I explore the individual and social concepts built around Komi, Russian, and German identities. My multicultural background is largely shaped by harsh Arctic conditions; thus, my artistic praxis is built on the observation of how social concepts, emotional experiences, and natural forces collide. I investigate forests, languages, and remnants of my memories.
Early in my work, I was interested in the full deconstruction of well-known systems. I started to examine the notion of linguistic 'purity’ in project RUDE (worldplay of meaningmade of language abbreviations RU and DE). It emerged as an appeal to 'unlearn' the laws of Russian and German grammar to free ourselves from the confinements of entrenched narratives and preconceived biases. In the project PATHFINDER, I similarly deconstructed a musical instrument intending of rebuilding it entirely to create sounds using an intuitive interface.
In the past four years, I have turned my attention toward the artistic research and ethnographic exploration of Komi culture. This involves engaging in a profound reflection on personal values and emotional experiences that have shaped my self-perception, placing them alongside the derogatory attitudes toward Komi in Russia and its invisibility in Germany. The historical colonization of Komi by Russia, as well as its ongoing extractivist politics toward the region, have significantly impacted Komi’s heritage, threatening its very existence. I focus here on investigation of personal pain and tracing the effects of violence on me and my family. Using videos, VR and 3D sculpturing, I transcend the Komi’s invisibility even for those who were born and raised in the heart of the region.
My work is distinguished by a visual vocabulary that spans from typography over animation, disrupting linear narratives and challenging conventional, dominant perceptions of monolingual reality. Collaborating with Nadya Tolokonnikova of Pussy Riot, I explore immersive journeys into the realm of 3D worlds. My practice is focused on crafting personal refuge and a sense of 'home,' that might resonate with everyone. Overall, it forms a multi-dimensional landscape translated back and forth from analog to digital realities.
